During the summer of 1988 I went on one of the greatest adventure of my life. I camped my way to Alaska with my Boy Scout troop. All 10 boys and 4 adults traveled in an RV by day and camped out at night. The entire trip took a month and I was exposed to so many wonderful mini adventures on the way.
We had a snowball fight in the middle of July thanks to the high altitude of the Rocky Mountains. I was able to see a close up view of my favorite creature of all time, the eagle, thanks to a tourist with a high powered camera lens. We got to hike up to and spend the night under the Mendenhall Glacier. And that was just in Canada and Alaska. On the way back home we stopped in Yellowstone National Park, The Bad Lands, Mount Rushmore and Devil’s Tower. What an adventure.
As a boy scout you advance in your rank by completing merit badges. This trip was the perfect opportunity to finish several badges. Our leaders would encourage us daily to work through the books that would earn us the next level in our adventure as scouts. However, thirteen year old boys didn’t care much about studying. Very few, if any of us, did any work and we remained stagnant in our growth as boy scouts.
God’s Greatest Adventure
God has given us a great adventure called life. There are times when we are on top of the world and things are going great. Kind of like the time when we got to hang out on the bridge of that ferry that took us from Canada to Juno, Alaska. Then there are times when we have to go through a difficult trial or hardship. That reminds me of the time I free climbed 200-300 feet up to the glacier. I wasn’t sure if I was going to make it down alive. What was I thinking?
No matter where you’re at in this adventure, God wants us to advance in our relationship with Him. He’s given us the Bible as a guide to help up get through the tough times and coast through the good. He’s provided a map to help us get the greatest benefit out of the greatest adventure.
I know there’s a lot of people out there that don’t like to read regular books let alone the Bible. There are some that are intimidated by everything the Bible contains. There’s even some people that don’t want to dig in because they know it will change their lives. Let me say this, God’s Word will never disappoint you. It will disrupt your life, create great life change, and alter your relationship with God, but it will never disappoint.
As scouts, we had the resources and opportunity to take our adventure to a new level, but we didn’t. I want to encourage you to advance your relationship with God while you’re on this adventure. It only takes a little time each day spent in His Word.
Let the adventure continue!
